Twenty One Pilots at Jones Beach Theater (Wantagh, NY)

twenty one pilots at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY.

📷✍️ for Juice Box Press.

Almost 10 years ago, I stood in front of my high school photography class and gave a presentation on photographer Brad Heaton’s work from when he was on tour with twenty one pilots. Brad’s and Reel Bear Media's work sparked my love for live music photography. It pushed me to think outside the box and create from a place that's uniquely mine, no one else’s.

I remember borrowing my family’s little point-and-shoot camera and bringing it to my first-ever twenty one pilots concert in 2016. At that point, I could only dream of photographing them up close, but creating photographs of them to any extent left me ecstatic. Every single time I had tickets to see them live, I’d bring that camera. My devotion to photography in general stemmed from the desire to translate experiences and feelings into visual art, and I felt the exact same way about documenting live music. Fast forward to today, and I can only imagine little me's face if I could tell them I was finally approved for a photo pass to shoot my favorite band!

I feel immensely grateful for everyone and everything that has helped me get to this point in my creative career. On my train ride home the next day, I was hit with the sweetest sensations of gratitude and security. I was finally processing the adrenaline rush of the night prior, and it felt like a great big hug from the universe, reminding me that I was meant to do this. I also thought about how, though this accomplishment feels like it happened out of nowhere, none of it happened overnight. It’s been years of late nights, learning from my successes and mistakes, and creating simply because my soul loves it. Standing in that photo pit last weekend, photographing a band that once reminded me to keep going, felt like every ounce of that persistence led me right where I was meant to be

Rebecca Black Sells Out The Sinclair

Fourteen years after her viral music video “Friday” amassed millions of views on YouTube in just a matter of days, Rebecca Black is redefining her stardom with a hypnotic electro-pop sound while continuing to honor her origins of internet sensation.

As far as sold-out shows go at The Sinclair, this one was a sight to see. The 525-capacity venue was filled to the brim with longtime fans and new admirers alike, who clearly appreciate and celebrate Rebecca Black’s ever evolving artistry. The show opened with a 2021 anniversary remix of “Friday,” and accompanying text visuals on a large screen with the lyrics to the hit song. That glimmer of nostalgia quickly transitioned into pure exhilaration as Black and her dancers graced the stage for “Tears in My Pocket” — one of the top tracks off her 2025 album, SALVATION. The distorted electronic pop paired perfectly with the performance: dancers in bejeweled hats, oversized sunglasses, and a small headset microphone fit for a pop queen. “Twist the Knife” and “American Doll” were just as thrilling, visually and sonically, with high tempos and words of vengeance.

Katie Gavin at Brighton Music Hall on Dec 14, 2024

If you’re familiar with the edgy, yet endearing style of pop band MUNA, then you likely wouldn’t be surprised by lead vocalist Katie Gavin’s incredible versatility.

Last week, the singer-songwriter and musician brought her very first headlining “What A Relief” tour to Brighton Music Hall — in promotion of her debut solo album under the same name.

During her December 14th stop in Boston, MA, Katie Gavin radiated an intimate, cozy energy from the moment she stepped on stage. At both corners of the stage were two small tables, adorned with an assortment of glowing salt lamps, candles, and two mugs, in which Gavin ceremoniously poured steaming tea from a strawberry-red pot. It all felt warm and intentional.

Gavin began her set with “Today,” a tender, melodious track about loneliness — and yet Gavin’s vocals and steady acoustic guitar made the space feel otherwise. This opening track along with the rest of her setlist have an atmospheric quality that invites you to listen closer and feel deeper. If Katie Gavin’s new solo venture has shown us anything, it’s that true artists stop at nothing to defy expectations and tell their stories however they feel is most authentic to their unraveling self-discovery.

Young Miko at Leader Bank Pavilion

Young Miko, born María Victoria Ramírez de Arellano Cardona in Puerto Rico, quickly rose to fame after the 2022 release of her debut EP, Trap Kitty, and her 2023 single, “Classy 101.” Fast forward a couple of years, and Young Miko has attracted a dedicated international fanbase — largely attributed to her endearing charisma, colorful aesthetic, and open celebration of her lesbian identity.

No matter the subgenre, there’s always something uniquely electric about Latin American live music. That was certainly the case for Young Miko’s show at Boston’s Leader Bank Pavilion last week. This was the 19th show of “The XOXO Tour” in support of her debut studio album Att., and it was full of Young Miko’s signature playful outfits and charming mannerisms.

The show opened with Young Miko behind a translucent veil covering the stage from top to bottom, sitting on a bed as she started singing “rookie of the year” from her new album. Once the second song began, “oye ma,” the veil lifted and revealed a thick blue curtain behind the stage and a large, light-up Tamagotchi prop that read “XOXO 2024.”

Young Miko’s full setlist consisted of 28 tracks, including her popular collaborations on KAROL G’s “DISPO,” Tainy’s “COLMILLO,” and Bad Bunny’s hit “FINA.”
