My Approach to Natural and Artistic Senior Portraits

In the 7-8 years that I’ve been working with seniors, I’ve learned that there’s a graceful balance between observation, creative direction, and play.

If you want the results to feel genuine, you can’t apply the same formula to every person you work with. Sure, there are techniques you revisit that ultimately add up to your signature style, but I like to believe there are compositions and “happy accidents” that simply fall into place when you work with a person. Their character, body language, the conversations you share in between photos, and the unpredictability of nature & light serve as guides when you grant them the attention they deserve. Medfield State Hospital is one of those locations I’ve shot at hundreds of times, and yet there’s never a shortage of perspectives to discover — as long as I open myself up to the overlooked and unplanned.

On 35mm & Digital: Cinematic Senior Portraits at Nantasket Beach (Part 1)

This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite sets of senior portraits I’ve ever delivered 🩵 — so much so that I’m splitting up my posts into two parts. Here’s part 1!

I hadn’t done many beach shoots until this year, but I really enjoyed trying something new! I always say that some of my favorite locations are the ones I’d never been to before, and that’s because they motivate me to rely less on muscle memory and more on perception. The fact that Laurianny added film to her shoot and was looking for a more cinematic look in general also made this experience a memorable one :)

How I Break The Mold of Traditional Senior Portrait Photography

With every new season of high school senior portraits, I ask myself what I can do to approach things differently. The last thing I want is to find myself applying the same formula to every single shoot. I want to show up for each person who trusts my vision, and meet them halfway: somewhere between my creative impulses and their unapologetic personality. Lately, that means seeking out backdrops, poses, and compositions that I haven’t tried before, which has been very rewarding!

When Jane reached out to me last spring, she was looking for something natural yet colorful. And while I’m not against working under cloudy skies, I am so happy we got such beautiful sunlight! ☀️

FSPA Senior Portraits in Beacon Hill and Boston Public Garden

I had so much fun exploring Beacon Hill and the Public Garden with Devin this summer! 🥰

I admire that Devin referenced his musical theatre background with his tap shoes in a few photos, as well as his love for Boston in general. It made the full experience so much more celebratory and personal!

Thanks @devincurley_ for trusting me with your vision 🫶
